About the PQE Courses
The Professional Qualifying Examinations are the main pathway to membership with the ICS and will provide you with full professional status. It is one of the world’s most recognisable qualifications and illustrates the developed knowledge and understanding of the commercial shipping industry.
To be eligible for membership, you will need to complete a total of seven papers. Four compulsory and three optional. This may be reduced by exceptions if you have other recognised maritime related qualifications.
By starting on the PQE it means you need to sit a minimum of two exams in your first year (one of which must be Shipping Business), and can choose how many to take thereafter from the Groups mentioned below. Once you have completed your PQEs you will be eligible to apply for membership with the Institute.

Term Dates

    • Group 1 : Compulsory Subjects
These subjects are compulsory because they represent the fundamental foundation of all activity within the commercial shipping industry:
            - Introduction to Shipping
              - Legal Principles in Shipping Business
                  - Economics of Sea Transport and International Trade
                      - Shipping Business
Note:a) All subjects in group 1 are required b) Shipping Business is compulsory in the first year

Optional subjects cover a wide range of practical shipping knowledge in full detail:

    • People working in accounts or technical departments wishing to broaden their knowledge of the commercial aspects of shipping.
      • Seafarers wishing a more in-depth background of decisions made by their shore-based colleagues.
        • Anyone within shipping with certain knowledge of the industry who feels they could do with a brush-up.
          • Anyone from a bank or other financial institutions, legal firm, insurance company or government organisation who wishes to know the basics of shipping operations.
